Dewey's Candy

When I found myself unemployed in late 2008, it gave me the opportunity to assess and redefine my next career move. Having spent over 25 years in the fashion industry working for such powerhouses as Donna Karan International and Victoria's Secret, it was time to pursue my dream of owning a business.

I began researching the perfect retail concept that would exude happiness, fun, and be inviting to people of all ages. The one thing that would appeal to both young and old was CANDY!!!!!!!!!!!

Being a candy lover since childhood, this was a perfect fit for me. I wanted to create a cool environment that would invite customers to stop in and buy their favorite childhood candies, as well as some of today's coolest gummy and sour sweets.

With today's challenging economy, nothing makes people smile more than a stroll back through time with some of their favorite childhood treats!

Having lived in DUMBO for the past eight years, I knew this thriving neighborhood was the perfect place to launch Dewey’s Candy. The name “Dewey” was derived from a nickname given to me by my father at the age of 2. Today the name is still endearingly used by many of my friends and family. I wish to celebrate Dewey's Candy in memory of my dad “Freddy O”, who shared his passion for candy with his little girl!

Dewey’s Candy opened on January 1st, 2010.

I was very fortunate to have the support of friends and family to get the store open. Whether they were painting walls, barrels, shelves or making coffee runs, it was their support that enabled me to open the store in thirty days from lease-signing to grand opening. When Hillary Clinton said, “It takes a village”, she wasn’t kidding!
